Why am I at this page instead of the site i entered?

Simple, you're using a browser which is too old to render the page. Rather than sending you to the page, and letting you see something that looks bad, I opted to show you how you can upgrade and to tell you why. This site was especially designed using old, outdated methods so I could ensure that you could read it properly.

Can't you leave me alone and let me get on my way?

Sure, but I recommend you read and understand this information when you have time so that you will have the best possible web experience. Follow one of these links to continue your navigation.

The web has evolved!

With the invention of web aware mobile devices (PDAs, cellphones, pagers, etc.) and web appliances, an institution known as W3C (The World Wide Web Consortium) has been inventing and steadily refining web standards to make HTML smaller, and more compact. This has the benefit of being easier for webmasters to make sites that work across a greater number of browsers and devices.

Part of the problem is, mobile devices (and similar) have limited resources to deal with sites that are poorly coded, and use old, outdated standards. Rather than try to make the devices so that it can deal with these things, manufacturers have decided to only support the newer standards of HTML coding. To do otherwise would mean larger software, and the need for more powerful devices.

What upgrading means for you

When you use Netscape 4.x, you miss a great many of the web's better offerings, such as those found at physics.isu.edu. A lot of these things can't support netscape 4.x due to the fact that it's extremely hard (if not impossible) to recreate the same effects that get used. In the end, it's in your own best interest to upgrade. You will have a faster, better, feature rich experience on the web.

What Netscape 4.x means for Webmasters

Since an appreciable number of people still use this browser version, many webmasters are forced to make their sites compliant to Netscape 4.x. This is often a tedious process that involves creating more than one version of the site to accomodate the users of Netscape 4.x. This equates to larger, bulkier webpages thar take longer to create, that are full of HTML tags and code which have long since been removed from web standards.

Where can I get a newer browser, and what are my options?

There are a few ways to go to get a newer browser, which are listed on the left.

There are others, but these three are the most designed for. In the end, using one of these three browsers will help you have the best possible web experience.

Which Browser do you recommend?

You may already have a browser that is compliant with web standards on your system, it may just not be set to be your default browser. If you need an new browser, I recommend mozilla, from http://mozilla.org/
